BALAD AIR BASE, Iraq -- Staff Sgt. Delbert Smith, 332nd Expeditionary Medical Operations Squadron intensive care unit technician, treats an Iraqi child at the Air Force Theater Hospital here Feb. 19. The child was injured by an 82-millimeter mortar round, which struck a soccer field where he and other children were playing in the village of Al Jumia. A 12-year-old Iraqi child was killed and seven others were wounded during the attack. The village lies to the north of Balad Air Base. Four rounds were launched toward the base, but all fell short. However, two of the rounds struck the field where children were playing. Sergeant Smith is deployed from Keesler Air Force Base, Miss. (U.S. Air Force photo/ Senior Airman Julianne Showalter)

Traffic on Meadows Drive at Fifth Street was narrowed to two lanes recently while underground utility conduit and duct banks were rerouted for the new commissary and base exchange. The road reopened Friday. A new commissary parking lot just east of the temporary facility is expected to open later this month so drainage construction and other work can proceed in the current patron parking area.
