BILOXI, Miss. -- Coordinators of the 2017 National Veterans Golden Age Games, the premier senior adaptive rehabilitation program, are looking for volunteers to assist veterans in various sporting events across the area May 7-11.
Veterans aged 55 or older from across the country who receive health care from the VA are able to compete in various sports like horseshoes, swimming, table tennis, track and more.
"There are only a few times in history where a community like ours has an opportunity to leave a lasting and positive impression on the rest of the country, and I think that opportunity for southern Mississippi is through hosting these games," said Anthony Dawson, GCVHCS director. "Veterans from all over the country are coming to compete in these games, and we have an opportunity to show them what ‘southern hospitality’ truly means and feels like."
The Department of Veterans Affairs Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System is the host VA site for the 2017 NVGAG. The NVGAG is the only national multi-event sports and recreational seniors' competition program designed to improve the quality of life for all older veterans, including those with a wide range of abilities and disabilities.
Volunteers are able to assist with numerous aspects of the Games beginning May 5-12, including event set-up, airport escort, and individual sport competitions. Volunteers must be 14 years old or older, unless accompanied by a parent or guardian for the entire duration of their shift.
