KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- Staff Sgt. Gregory V. Pennington, 2nd Battalion 7th Cavalry Regiment infantryman, Fort Hood, Texas, was killed in Baghdad on June 21, 2004 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. That day, his company was sharing their successful operational techniques with other units in the area when their forward operating base came under fire. Stunned, the other unit's security team froze. Pennington guided them to their hardened shelter, pushing each one inside before a mortar hit beside his position at the door. His sacrifice is significant because his team and the others were able to continue their missions and later went on to spearhead the infamous second Battle of Fallujah for the U. S. Marine Corps.
