KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- Tech. Sgt. Allen J. Avery, from Auburn, Massachusetts was a pararescue specialist assigned to the 37th Air Rescue and Recovery Squadron and was killed during a mission over Vietnam.
On April 6th, 1972, Avery was one of six crew members aboard an HH-53C Super Jolly Green Giant on a mission to rescue crew members from a downed aircraft. The helicopter encountered severe hostile fire rendering the aircraft uncontrollable. They crashed, killing all six members, however Avery’s remains were not recovered and identified until 1997.
Avery Manor on Keesler Air Force Base was named in honor of his service and sacrifice.
