The base tax office opens Jan. 20 at the Sablich Center here in Room 229.

Income tax return preparation is provided free of charge weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Walk-in assistance is available, but scheduling is preferred.

Tax preparation is part of the Internal Revenue Service Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, with trained and certified base volunteers in various units.

The following forms are required:

-W-2s
-1099 Interest Income
-1099 Dividend Income
-Social security numbers for spouse and dependents
-Documents which reflect any deductions such as child care, mortgage interest, medical expenses, real estate taxes, etc.

Some changes for this filing year are:

-Health care coverage - Indicate that you and your spouse (if filing jointly) and your dependents had health care coverage throughout 2014.
-Personal exemptions increased to $3,950.
-Standard mileage rates reduced to 56 cents a mile for the business use of your car.

When you have your taxes prepared, have your documents organized and complete. If you have dividend income, you can't file until you receive the appropriate information from your investments, usually after Jan. 31 or up to another month. You must have documentation for every deduction you declare.
