KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- Mardi Gras, the largest free outdoor party on the gulf coast, is just around the corner and many of us will travel to New Orleans, La., Mobile, Al. or stay in the local area to celebrate and partake in the carnival activities.
The 81st Training Wing Safety Office would like to give Airmen a few tips to have a safe carnival season.
- Ensure your phone is on and charged.
-
Make a plan. Before you go out, set a meeting time and rally point in case someone gets separated from the group.
-
Appoint a designated driver.
-
Don't drink and drive.
-
Don’t urinate in public. Public urination is one of the leading causes of arrests during the holiday.
-
Obey all "no parking" zones - illegally parked vehicles will be towed. Officials suggest you arrive early to find parking close to the parade route.
-
Don't carry open glass or metal containers in public.
-
Use the wingman system. Don’t end up lost or alone. Stick with friends and be safe.
-
Don't leave children, elderly or intoxicated friends or family members who may not be totally in control of their actions unattended.
-
Watch children closely. Small children should have name tags in the event they become lost.
-
As with any large public event, pickpockets and purse snatchers may be active. Men shouldn't carry wallets in their back pockets. Don't wear expensive jewelry.
-
Don't stand between a tractor and the float. Don't press too close to floats.
-
Don't push others while trying to retrieve beads, coins and other Mardi Gras paraphernalia.
-
Don't throw things at floats or marching units or harass them in any way.
-
Cabs are busy; wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing to walk in.
-
Follow any instructions police may give. It is unlawful to cross police barricades that line most parade routes.
-
Take time when leaving parking areas after the parade. Defensive driving is a must.
The 2016 carnival season in South Mississippi is slated to begin Jan. 16 and end with Mardi Gras on Feb. 9. This means increased alcohol consumption, traffic and partying in the local area. Be on the lookout for drunken drivers late at night, especially around the casinos.
To ensure you have a great and safe time celebrating, follow these safety tips, obey city ordinances and don’t forget to make some memories!
