Tax Center open for appointments

The Base Tax Office will open Jan. 23 to provide income tax return preparation services.

The center staff provides customers their assistance free of charge primarily by appointment, though some walk-ins may be assisted based on availability.

Tax preparation is done through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. The volunteers undergo training which will result in having tax preparers in various squadrons.

When coming in to have your taxes prepared, ensure your documents are organized and complete. If you have dividend income, you may have to wait until you receive the appropriate information from your investments before you attempt to file. This information usually arrives by Jan. 31; however, it can take up to another month to arrive.

In addition, customers must have documentation to support every deduction they declare.

The following forms and information are required to prepare an income tax return:
• W-2’s, 1099’s
• 1099 INT (Interest Income)
• 1099 DIV (Dividend Income)
• Social Security Numbers for spouse and dependents
• Documents which reflect deductions such as child care, mortgage interest paid, medical, real estate taxes, etc.,
• Affordable Health Care Act Form
• Last year’s tax return.

Changes to filing a 2016 return:
• Proof of Health Care Coverage which must indicate you and your spouse (if filing jointly), and your dependents had health care coverage throughout 2016.Personal exemptions have increased to $4,050.
• Standard mileage rates reduced for the business use of your car to 54 cents a mile.
