Chris Moore, an 18-year-old senior at Ocean Springs High School, is being honored as Keesler's Youth of the Year during this week's National Boys and Girls Club of America Week.

Chris, son of Air Force retiree Thomas and Jamie Moore, was recognized for his volunteerism at the youth center, his school and the community.

"Our staff, his family and his teachers speak of Chris as respectful, thoughtful, good character and friend, leader, confident, charming, smart, a role model and mediator," said Ann Smith, Keesler's youth programs director.

"Christopher spends hours every week contributing back to the youth center," said Cindy Ray, Keesler Keystone Club adviser. "His most valuable contribution to the program over the years has been his demonstration as a role model for other youth."

Ms. Smith explained that Keesler participates in the annual youth of the year program as an affiliated of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. Through a rigorous application process, an outstanding teen from the youth center is selected based on good moral character, leadership, community involvement, academic achievement and service to the club.

Chris, an honor roll student, has participated in high school football, band and track and field. His goals include gaining a college track and field scholarship, studying graphic design, obtaining an internship with a major corporation that designs video games and even aspiring to become a professional athlete.

Chris, his mother and youth center staff member Steven Hinton represented Keesler at Mississippi's Youth of the Year celebration in Jackson.
