Perhaps taking a cue from the past 15 months, the women's varsity basketball team staged its own "Operation Dragon Comeback" on Nov. 29.

With time running out, the Lady Dragons trailed Faulkner State of Mobile, seemingly destined for a fifth straight defeat in a winless season.

Enter their version of Keesler's recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

"Our defense got a couple of key steals that launched the comeback," said Teddy Johnson, assistant coach, of the 58-54 victory in overtime.

A three-pointer by Shell Joseph bought the Lady Dragons the additional period.

In overtime, "Rene McClennon and Keisha Watkins took over on the inside," Johnson said. "Down the stretch, we hit our free throws to seal the game."

Watkins led Keesler in scoring with 25 points. Joseph followed with 19.

Watkins came to the fore again with eight rebounds. McClennon and Rene Sedlak provided balance on the boards, retrieving seven missed shots each.

Kanesha Webber recorded five assists.

The Lady Dragons are now 1-4 overall, 0-2 in the Southeastern Military Athletic Conference. They're scheduled to shop for their first conference victories, 2 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday, against Mayport Naval Air Station, Fla., in Blake Fitness Center.
