October marks the federal government’s observance of Energy Action Month, highlighting the importance of energy and water for the Air Force.  The observation month encourages smart energy and water use and management for installations, ground vehicles and aircraft.

The Air Force’s Energy Action Month theme, “Protect the Power”, serves as a call to action for Air Force members to practice energy efficient habits in their daily lives and to champion smart energy policies and procedures.

“Keesler is working on several initiatives to protect the power that includes a major Energy Savings Performance Contract that is set to begin in early November,” explained Marc Groves, Base Operations Support installation energy manager. “With this contract, upgrades will be made to the infrastructure, which includes exterior and interior LED lighting, heating ventilation and air conditioning digital controls and implementing fix set points, which in turn will alleviate crazy temperature flux and decrease gas and electricity consumption.”

To support Energy Action Month, materials will be available on Keesler’s website to educate Airmen about the important role energy and water play in every aspect of the Air Force mission and the role each person plays as a steward of these resources. Whether implementing aviation fuel efficiency projects or take action at individual installations, every effort taken by the Air Force community contributes to protecting energy and water resources and helps increase Air Force combat capability.

All aspects of the Air Force’s mission depend on a reliable supply of energy and using that energy smarter means flying aircraft farther, transporting more cargo and accomplishing the mission in a more efficient and effective way.

“Renewable energy is coming to Keesler,” said Groves. “The base is upgrading to energy efficient motors HVAC equipment, upgrading HVAC controls in most facilities on base and installing solar panels and lighting.”

Everyone in the Air Force, from Airmen to civilians to contractors, play a key role in conserving energy by making energy a consideration in all that we do. Airmen are challenged to protect the power by looking for ways to save electricity, natural gas and water. Every effort counts and small changes in Air Force community members’ daily habits lead to substantial savings when multiplied across the Air Force.
