Traumatic events, injuries covered under Service Group Life Insurance Published May 2, 2013 By Daniel Ransom 81st Medical Group KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. -- Most military members are unaware that if they receive Service Group Life Insurance, they also are entitled to Traumatic Service Group Life Insurance. What is TSGLI and how does someone know if I they are eligible to receive this benefit? TSGLI is a rider to SGLI. It provides payment to service members who are seriously injured (on and off duty) as a result of a traumatic event and suffer a loss that qualifies them for payment under TSGLI. TSGLI payments range from $25,000 to $100,000 based on the qualifying loss suffered. Payments are designed to help traumatically-injured service members and their families with financial burdens associated with recovery from a severe injury. Every service member with SGLI also has TSGLI effective Dec. 1, 2005. TSGLI coverage is also provided retroactively for members who incurred severe losses as a result of traumatic injuries suffered between Oct. 7, 2001 and Nov. 30, 2005, in Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom, regardless whether they had SGLI coverage at the time of their injury. Losses that qualify for TSGLI payment include, but are not limited to, extended hospitalization (15 or more consecutive days) and requiring assistance with at least two of the six listed activities of daily living. ADLs are such things needing assistance with dressing independently and transferring independently (moving in and out of bed or a chair). Even though this entitlement is designed to aid service members and their families with recovery, the service member may use it any way they deem necessary. For example, if someone was injured a year and a half ago, hospitalized for 15 consecutive days and made a full recovery and no longer needs the entitlement for the recovery process, the individual is still entitled to and eligible to apply for TSGLI. For more information on the TSGLI entitlement, contact Daniel Ransom, the Air Force recovery care coordinator for wounded, injured or ill service members at Keesler, 228-376-3076 or daniel.ransom.1.ctr@us.af.mil. Or, contact Donna Anderson, active-duty wounded warrior nurse case manager, at (228)376-3068 or donna.anderson.1@us.af.mil. Additional information is available on the Department of Veterans Affairs website, www.va.gov . The TSGLI entitlement is for any traumatic injury, whether from a traffic accident on the way to work or a wound suffered in a combat zone.
