Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors military members and is observed on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates American service members who died in service to their country.

First enacted to honor Union and Confederate soldiers following the Civil War, the observance was extended after World War I to honor Americans who have died in all wars.
