5 earn African-American heritage scholarships

Five graduating seniors were awarded scholarships by the African-American Heritage Committee at a luncheon at the Bay Breeze Event Center Friday.

Kurt Higgins, AAHC president, said the committee raised the scholarship funds from bowling and golf tournaments, a gospel fest and a soul food sampling.

DJ Hogue, recipient of a $1,000 scholarship, graduates from Biloxi High School and will major in aerospace engineering at Mississippi State University. His parents are Dave and Jessamyn Hogue, 81st Training Support Squadron.

Yolanda Cruz, recipient of a $750 scholarship, also graduates from Biloxi High and plans to major in journalism at the University of Southern Mississippi. Her parents are Beatriz Falcon and Larry Cruz.

Taylor Miller, who received a $500 scholarship, graduates from Ocean Springs High School and will major in physics at the University of Mississippi. His parents are Glenn and Linda Miller.

Cassandra Acker, recipient of a $500 scholarship, graduates from Hancock High School and plans to major in psychology at Belhaven College. Her mother is Shirley Acker. She wasn't able to attend the luncheon.

André Jackson received a $500 scholarship from the Lawrence E. Roberts Gulf Coast Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen Inc. He graduates from Gulfport High School and will be a physical therapy major at USM. His parents are Tech. Sgt. Adrian and Carol Jackson, 81st Medical Support Squadron.
