Lt. Col. Janet Haug, 81st Training Support Squadron commander, and 2nd Lt. Laura Piranio, 81st Logistics Readiness Squadron, represented Keesler's John C. Stennis Chapter No. 332 of the Air Force Association at the annual AFA Symposium Feb. 18-20 in Orlando, Fla.

Colonel Haug, president of the chapter, said the trip spurred a chapter theme for the coming year - Educating the Gulf Coast in Air, Space and Cyber.

"I found it to be a well-organized symposium that really highlighted space, cyberspace and the operations in Haiti," she remarked. "I had the opportunity to meet with officers from the Orlando chapter and the national board of directors. I came back with lots of good tips, techniques and guidance to continue to grow our chapter."

"Air Force Secretary Michael Donley was the symposium opener and spoke on a range of topics from remotely-piloted aircraft to incentives for stressed career fields,"
Lieutenant Piranio said. "Gen. Norton Schwartz, chief of staff of the Air Force, spoke on cyberspace and the undiscovered possibilities. Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James Roy and the commanders of many major commands were there."

Lieutenant Piranio said the speeches covered a wide range of topics, including the stand-up of Cyber Command, logistical challenges in Afghanistan, the sustainment of the aging fleet, lessons learned from Haiti and how to modernize the Air Force under fiscal restraints.

Running in tandem with the speeches and technology expo was the Cyber Patriot games, a national cyber defense contest for high school students and members of Junior ROTC programs and Civil Air Patrol chapters.

"I brought back information to our chapter's vice president of aerospace education, Paul Deitke of the 338th Training Squadron , to share with local units to spur their involvement," Colonel Haug said.
