Keesler strives for safe summer

KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, Miss. --  As the summer begins and Airmen plan to take vacations and participate in seasonal activities they are reminded to keep safety first during the 101 Critical Days of Summer. 

This year's theme, "Live to Play, Play to Live", reminds Airmen and their families to enjoy well-deserved recreation time in a responsible, safety-conscious way. Every Airman is a priceless asst to their own family and the Air Force. 

"The 101 Critical Days of Summer is historically the period when we experience an increase in the number of accidents between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend," said Mr. Virgil Mitchell, 81st Training Wing Safety ground safety manager. "Summertime is the time we put ourselves at the greatest risk." 

Between the years 1997-2008, the Air Force has lost an average 24 Airmen each year. Last year 17 Airmen were fatally injured; five to motorcycle mishaps, four to automobile accidents, four to sports and recreational activities, three were pedestrians, and one occurred while performing vehicle maintenance. 

At Keesler, the wing commander has directed each unit to conduct a 101 Critical Days of Summer Kick-off event during the week of May 18-22. 

"These events will include safety guidance from Air Force leadership, safety briefings covering information from the Air Force Safety Center and the 81st TRW/SE office, and face-to-face focus groups to discuss personal risk awareness and mitigation of risks during summer activities," said Maj. Karl Zurbrugg, 81st TRW/ SE. 

Keesler has designated the first week of the summer campaign as "Motorcycle and Sport Bike Safety Week" and had a Motorcycle Safety day event that will encourage and raise awareness about smart riding habits. 

"Leadership at every level can make the difference between saving lives and losing them. Please let your Airmen know how important they are, and that you personally care about their safety," the major said.
