Keesler observed Feb. 21 as Arbor Day during a ceremony at the child development center.

Brig. Gen. Patrick Higby, 81st Training Wing commander, accepted an award from Donna Yowell, executive director of the Mississippi Urban Forestry Commission, in recognition of Keesler's designation as a Tree City USA. The general was assisted by the child development center's preschool class in planting a Live oak tree during the event.

Jenna Weatherford, executive director of the Harrison County Beautification Commission, talked about the importance of planting pride along with every tree and flower.

This is the 21st year the Keesler has earned the national Tree City USA honor from the Arbor Day Foundation, the nation's largest nonprofit organization dedicated to planting trees. Keesler is home to more than 12,000 trees including approximately 25 acres of the Naval Oaks Reserve in marina park.

In order to become a Tree City USA community Keesler had to meet four standards. Tree City USA communities must have a tree board, a tree-care ordinance, a community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

As a member of the Tree City USA community Keesler recognizes that trees promote a healthier community by filtering air; moderating climate, conserving water and providing a healthy habitat for wildlife; reducing the heat island effect in urban areas caused by pavement and buildings; and reducing energy use.
