The Great American Smokeout Nov. 21, encourages smokers base-wide to go a day without a cigarette.

This American Cancer Society event will be supported by the health and wellness center with a booth at the base exchange from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and one at the Keesler Medical Center clinic entrance from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

"We're supporting unit's efforts for the challenge," said Terri Jordan, HAWC health promotion manager. "We'll provide the info and materials needed, but the real challenges and prizes can be handled by each squadron."

The idea is that co-workers will hold each other accountable for at least the one-day challenge, said Jordan.

To support those wishing to quit, the table at the exchange will allow Keesler personnel to trade their cigarettes for gum, mints, suckers and other items.

The table at the Medical Center will be set with tobacco cessation program info and respiratory therapy. The therapy team will be set up to test members lung capacity to show the effects smoking has on lungs, said Jordan.

Getting the base involved may create a platform for quitters to start off strong.

"Spread the word," said Staff Sgt. Andrew Dailey, 81st Aerospace Medicine Squadron bioenvironmental engineering technician. "Promote resources for smoking cessation to help your quitters quit."

The HAWC has "quitkits," posters, flyers, brochures and more to assist you with squadron-level participation. The HAWC hosts the "freshstart" program on Wednesdays for those that need a quitting support group.
